Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that its embassy in Sweden had received a copy of a letter sent by Stockholm to the heads of missions of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, through its agent, which included an apology for Burning a copy of the Koran near a mosque in the Swedish capital on Wednesday.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its Twitter page that its Swedish counterpart expressed "deep regret" for the incident on Wednesday.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry confirmed that its Swedish counterpart pointed out in its statement that Stockholm "strongly rejects such anti-Islamic actions and that it does not support or condone in any way the anti-Islamic views expressed by the person concerned during this incident," according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry statement.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry indicated, according to the Iraqi statement, that the government understands the feeling of “humiliation” felt by Muslims inside and outside the country, and that the police are “in the process of conducting an investigation regarding suspected violations in accordance with the Swedish hate crimes law,” noting that Sweden has laws that guarantee “freedom of assembly and expression.” and demonstration” and that the police make the decision to allow the protests to be organized independently and that the Swedish Foreign Ministry informed the police of “concerned considerations from its point of view.”
