Today marks the 72nd anniversary of the No Gun Ri massacre, where the U.S. military killed 400 Korean refugees using airstrikes and machine-gun fire.To this date, the U.S. refuses to offer an official apology or compensate the survivors of the massacre.

In the summer of 1950, Korean villagers were being evacuated by U.S. troops from areas captured by North Korean forces, who wanted to reunify the peninsula. An estimated 600 people sought refuge in the town of No Gun Ri.

On the morning of July 26, 1950, the Korean villagers found that the escorting U.S. soldiers had abandoned them.As the refugees continued their escape route, U.S. soldiers appeared again, searching and confiscating their belongings.

Around noon, as the Korean refugees rested along a railway embankment, U.S. aircraft suddenly strafed and bombed them. Witnesses who survived the raids say that following the airstrikes, US soldiers reappeared and started shooting the wounded refugees who remained on the tracks.

The remaining survivors were forced under continuous U.S. ground fire into a double tunnel beneath a concrete railroad bridge, where they came under heavy machine-gun fire again.Around 400 people were massacred, according to the earliest published accounts and survivors.

Of the certified victims, 41% were children under the age of 15. 70% were women, children above 15, or men over the age of 61.
